Church of England Past Cases Review (2)
In March 2020 Denby PCC provided a response to the Derby Diocesan Safeguarding
Team which is collating a submission to be sent to the Church of England National
Safeguarding Team as part of its second Past Cases Review (covering the period
from 2007).
Protocols and practice guidance for the Church of England’s Past Cases Review 2
(PCR2) have been published and are on the National Church of England Website
(www.churchofengland.org/safeguarding/promoting-safer-church/safeguarding-news-
statements/past-cases-review-2). Individual survivors who wish to make
representations to the PCR2 process in the Diocese or who need to come forward
with information or make any disclosures regarding church related abuse are
encouraged to make direct contact with the Derby Diocese Safeguarding Team on
01332 388678. However, recognising that this may not feel safe for those with
experience of abuse from within the church, a dedicated national helpline - 0800
802020 - operated independently from the church, by the NSPCC, was set up in
September 2019 and remains available.
Denby PCC Policies
At St Mary's Church we are committed to valuing all people and providing an
environment in which everyone can be nurtured and safe. As a church in the Derby
Diocese we follow the current diocesan guidance, policies and training related to
safeguarding, which draw on the policies and guidance of the House of Bishops of
the Church of England. At its meeting on 12 November 2019, Denby Parochial
Church Council voted unanimously to adopt the “The Church of England’s Promoting
a Safer Church Safeguarding Policy for children, young people and adults.”
This document contains the following six Policy Commitments:
1.
Promoting a safer environment and culture.
2.
Safely recruiting and supporting all those with any responsibility related to
children and vulnerable adults within the Church.
3.
Responding promptly to every safeguarding concern or allegation.
4.
Caring pastorally for victims/survivors of abuse and other affected persons.
5.
Caring pastorally for those who are the subject of concerns or allegations of
abuse and other affected persons.
6.
Responding to those that may pose a present risk to others.
